Mission Intro #7 – Building in 3D

Designing for 3D printing presents some challenges on top of the normal difficulties of 3D model design. This mission will help apprentices think not just in 3 dimensions, but also think in terms of the fabrication process that their models must undergo. They will plan for layer-by-layer construction, add scaffold-like supports to their models, and find the right balance between strength and efficiency.

Mission Intro #6 – Simple Machines I (Levers, Pulleys, Wheels)

Levers, pulleys and wheels are used every day to lift or move heavy objects such as pulleys in an elevator, handle levers on a wheelbarrow, or the tires on a bicycle. In this mission, apprentices will be introduced to these simple machines and learn about their benefits through experimentation and play.

Mission Intro #5 – Scratch for Games

Learn the basics of block coding with the Scratch programming tool. Create a simple video game that can keep score, has a winning and losing condition, and uses sprites (digital images) to move around the screen controlled by the keyboard.

Mission Intro #4 – Photography & Animation

Learn the basics of digital photography, editing, and animation. Plan, light, and pose digital photographs, use a simple editing program to create a great digital composition, and highlight the desired aspects of the image. Then, build your animation skills using a series of stop motion techniques, both in 2 and 3 dimensions.

Mission Intro #3 – Simple Structures

Apprentices will learn the fundamentals of simple structures by creating scaffolding and bridges in this very hands-on mission. Learning by tinkering is the objective and along the way apprentices will develop their fabrication skills.

Mission Intro #2 – Intro to Robotics (Lego)

In this mission, apprentices will learn fundamental robotic skills as they create their own robot that reacts to coded instructions while learning how to trouble shoot problems along the way.

Mission #1: Build to Solve Intro

Our Lead Instructional Designer, Jesse Brydle, introducing our foundational mission #1.

Steamoji’s “Build to Solve” program compliments and enriches your child’s school studies by exposing them to new technologies in fabrication, physical computing, engineering and digital arts. With these foundational skills, students are then challenged with problems and encouraged to imagine, create and improve their own solutions.

This mission is available virtually over Zoom or at any local Steamoji academy.

April 15 is Steamoji Day!

A few years ago I travelled to Florence with my wife and had the opportunity to visit the Leonardo da Vinci Museum. The breadth of Da Vinci’s ‘maker’ skills was striking.

At Steamoji, our mission is to teach children ‘hard’ maker skills around fabrication, physical computing, engineering, digital arts and coding as well as ‘soft’ Steamoji skills to develop a maker, build-to-solve, mindset. Part of that mission is to celebrate makers of all ages, of all skill levels and across all times. With that in mind, we have designed 4 ‘house teams’ across our 10 different achievement levels and given them names inspired by great makers of the past century: Thomas Edison, Grace Hopper, Steve Jobs, and Nikolai Tesla. Additionally, we wanted to choose one day out of the year where all our academies could come together and celebrate the maker mindset. It seemed appropriate to use today, Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday – April 15th.
